New Delhi: Cyclone Sitrang is turning into a cyclone from a very deep depression. It is coming towards the Bengal-Bangladesh border. This cyclone will make landfall on Tuesday morning. The Central Meteorological Department has said that the possible landfall of the cyclone will be in Bangladesh. However, this cyclone will affect several states of the country. West Bengal has the highest chance of rain and storm. Apart from this, heavy to very heavy rains are also expected in several northeastern states, Tripura, Assam, Mizoram, Manipur and Nagaland.
Cyclone Sitrang is gaining strength over the Bay of Bengal. It is likely to make landfall between Tinkona Island and Sandwip in Bangladesh in the early hours of Tuesday. Although the cyclone will not have a major impact as it passes over the state, there is a possibility of heavy rains with thundershowers. North and South 24 Parganas and East Medinipur will be most affected by Sitrang. Alerts have already been issued in these districts. Huge forces have been deployed to deal with the disaster.
According to the sources of the Meteorological Department, Sitrang has already taken the form of a cyclone over the Bay of Bengal. Due to this, heavy to very heavy rains will start from today, Monday. Wind speed may reach 60 kilometers per hour. Apart from West Bengal, there will be heavy rains in North Eastern states. Tripura will be most affected by Cyclone Sitrang. Maximum rainfall is 200 mm in 24 hours.
The Meteorological Department has already issued a red alert for Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur and Nagaland. Orange alert has been issued in West Bengal and Arunachal Pradesh. The Tripura government has ordered closure of all educational institutions including schools and colleges till October 26 to protect against the effects of Cyclone Sitrang. All government employee holidays have also been canceled for the next week.
The National Disaster Response Force has also been asked to be prepared. Where heavy to very heavy rains are likely, NDRF has been asked to deploy additional forces.
A red alert has been issued in Assam's Kachar, Karimganj and Halaikandi. Red alert has also been issued in 11 districts of Mizoram, 8 districts of Tripura and 16 districts of Nagaland.
