KABUL: Her crime was eloping with a married man. But, there is a lack of women's prisons in the country. Therefore, the Taliban authorities decided to publicly stone him to death. To avoid that brutal death in public, an Afghan woman finally committed suicide by tying a dupatta around her neck. The sensational incident happened last week, in Afghanistan's Ghor province.

According to local media reports, the incident started a week ago. The woman ran away from home with a married man of the village. But, this story reached the ears of the Taliban authorities. Then, both the woman and the man were punished by the Taliban. Last Thursday (October 13), the married man with whom the woman eloped was executed. It was said that on Friday, the woman would be stoned and killed. But, he committed suicide before that.

"Because we don't have a women's prison here, the woman was sentenced to public stoning," said Abdur Rahman, spokesman for the Taliban provincial police in Ghor province. But, before being punished, he ended his life by suffocating himself with a dupatta.” According to sources, the trend of women running away from home has increased recently in various provinces of Afghanistan. And to curb this trend, the Taliban government decided to stone them to death or publicly flog them.

The Taliban regained power in Afghanistan in August 2021. Since then, the Taliban regime has gradually eroded women's rights and freedoms. Women are excluded from education to work due to restrictions. It started with imposing restrictions on education. Female students are prohibited from attending school above class VI. As a result, Afghan women now face an extreme human rights crisis. Deprived of basic rights to education, work, social participation and health.
